The School of Science & Technology at Middlesex is seeking BCS (British Computer Society) accreditation for this course and you will be eligible for BCS membership retrospectively when it is awarded.
This module aims to provide the student with an understanding of the peripheral issues that impact on information development and management including consensus, strategic alignment and change management. The module provides students with an understanding of the framework within which information assets are used to enhance organisational decision making. It also enables students to distinguish between information and knowledge at the organisational level, and to understand the importance of protecting information assets especially within the outsourcing scenario.
Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence (30 Credits)
This module aims to develop an understanding of the techniques and approaches used to develop and deploy a data warehouse for purposes of business intelligence. The module will examine data quality and data transformation methods and practices. Intelligent data mining theories and methods that aid knowledge discovery are introduced. You will also learn about information retrieval, data presentation and pattern recognition techniques that are used in business intelligence applications.
Social, Professional and Ethical Issues in Information Systems (30 Credits)
With the growing use of information systems in all areas of life it is increasingly important for today’s graduates who are tomorrow’s professionals to understand and appreciate the ethical implications and social impact of current technologies, to have a working knowledge of the legislation that applies in this area, and to apply their expertise in a professional way. This module encourages students to develop an awareness of their role in the implementation of new technologies, and the knowledge and skills necessary for a professional approach. The module takes an ethical perspective to computer technology, focusing on legislation and standards as they relate to IS practice in various different domains. The module will also include considerations for design, and the responsibilities and requirements of the IT profession for example, as identified in the British Computer Society Code of Conduct: Promote equal access to the benefits of IS by all groups in society; Have regard for the legitimate rights of third parties; Promote public understanding of IS, its benefits and pitfalls; Have knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
IS Project (30 Credits)
The primary aims of this module are to consolidate and deepen the student’s knowledge and skills gained from other parts of the programme, and to provide a tangible demonstration of the student’s scholarship and ability work in a sustained, systematic and professional manner.
We normally make offers to students holding the NCC Advanced Diploma, BTEC Higher National Diploma, Advanced Progression Diplomas are also accepted where appropriate.
International entry requirements
We accept the equivalent of the above from most recognised international awarding bodies such as Aptech and Pearson. We also accept students who have completed 2 years of study at a University in a similar field.
English language requirements
We normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification such as SEC O'level at grade 5 or better.
The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.0 (with minimum 5.5 in all four components) or equivalent
Our BSc Honours Business Information Systems degree prepares you for a wide range of varied careers. IT Project Manager - An IT Project Manager specialises in information technology but also in sectors unrelated to IT that rely on IT systems. Their role is to manage the development and implementation of plans to meet business needs and the change control procedures to ensure a smooth transition during the implementation period.
Systems Designer - A Systems Designer develops and implements information systems in sectors as diverse as finance, communications and retail. The role can involve working on all elements of the system including hardware, software, installation and maintenance. There are a range of opportunities in this increasingly varied industry.
Systems Developer - Systems Developers test systems, diagnose and fix faults, write diagnostic programs and design and write code for operating systems and software to ensure that they function more efficiently. They may also create systems in response to technical specifications supplied by an IT analyst, often integrating off-the-shelf software packages into existing systems.
IT Systems/Business Analyst - An IT Systems/Business Analyst designs new IT solutions to improve business efficiency and productivity. They are responsible for analysing the business needs of their clients and stakeholders to help identify business problems and propose solutions, using the discipline of business analysis. They examine existing business models and the flows of data in the business, and then design an appropriate improved IT solution.
Information Systems Manager - An Information Systems Manager installs computer systems, ensures that back-up systems operate effectively, buys hardware and software, provides the ICT technology infrastructures for an organisation, and contributes to organisational policy with regard to quality standards and strategic planning.
